I revered the women in my community who made pound cakes.
Pound cake is one of those cakes that doesn't hide. No frosting to cover for it. No layers to distract you. Just butter, eggs, flour, sugar, and whether the baker knew what she was doing.
Ours is dense without being heavy. Buttery the whole way through. The crust gets just dark enough. It tastes like a Sunday at somebody's grandmother's house — the kind where the cake sat under a glass dome on the counter all week and got better every day.
